Societal Impact of Robotics

Overview Technology has always played an essential role in human work, progress and advancement. From the very first stone ax to the artificial intelligence driven robots today, technology has advanced with years and so have we, the humans. With the advances in technology, machines that were increasingly working alongside humans, or for humans, have come a long way and have started working on their own. Thus, the way, we the humans live and do things today and the coming tomorrow is changing fundamentally. Artificial Intelligence driven automation has begun to transform entities across nations: its government, industries, organizations and academia (NGIOA). However, the real question is whether we the humans are ready and prepared for the fundamental transformation brought on by artificial intelligence -and whether the fundamental transformation makes social and economic sense. To understand whether Artificial Intelligence, Robots and Robotics bring positive benefits requires structured evaluation. When we evaluate AI based Robots, we are already witnessing companion robots for elderly care, service robots for personal and domestic use, and many more categories that seem to be on the way. While there are reports that have shown that robots can have a very positive impact on elderly care, there are also many reports that forecast large number of human jobs becoming obsolete.  Even as some studies are already under way to understand the effects of artificial intelligence on human society in general; its effects on the economy, industries, businesses, security, war and peace needs to be properly evaluated. As Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and technological progress will likely redefine the meaning and nature of not only human species but humanity and human age, it brings us many more questions than we have answers today. This is a cause of great concern. While the ability to create autonomous intelligent robots with perception, cognition, and action, able to coexist with humans can be viewed as the ultimate and most challenging goal of artificial intelligence, it is important to understand its societal impact on individuals and entities across nations: its governments, industries, organizations, academia (NGIOA).
